Touring the Tors on Dartmoor (September 2026)
Twelve Ibexers, including two first weekenders, gathered on Friday evening at Bernard’s Acre, comfortable and thoughtfully modernised and equipped and in beautiful grounds on the northern edge of the moor near Okehampton.
Saturday’s walk, led by Rod and Gusta, in perfect weather, dry and a slight breeze, not too sunny or hot, was a 12 mile loop of Yes Tor, West Mill Tor,
High Willhays – the highest point on Dartmoor
-- with a lunch stop at Dinger Tor, where Susan left a message from the Club in the Dartmoor letterbox (a plastic food container)
then Oke Tor, Higher Tor,
Belstone Tor and on to the pub, the aptly named Tors Inn, for refreshment.
June took a post-walk plunge in the chilly waters of the River Taw which runs at the edge of the grounds of the house, but others were not made of gritty enough stuff to join her.
The evening meal prepared by many cooks was up to Ibex’s best standards, with two starters and two desserts. When we got to the main course after a pause to allow the purple sweet potatoes to cook to perfection, the decibels dropped and an uncharacteristic hush fell around the table as we concentrated on wolfing it all down. Later, to work some of it off, we took a gentle stroll to the village and back with not many stars to be seen that night as the full moon was so bright.
On Sunday morning, in less clement weather, David led a short circular walk along Belstone Cleave to South Zeal and Ramsley.
We departed to go our separate ways on Sunday afternoon hoping that some day we might come back to this wonderful place.
