Escaping the Red Alert: a long weekend in Coniston (June 2026)
A large-ish group of Ibexers escaped the red heat alert in the South-east and headed for the relatively fresh climes of Coniston. We stayed at the MAM hut which Jim and Viv had organised and which was very handily located both for dinner at the Black Bull pub on Thursday evening and for buying restorative ice creams from the petrol station throughout the weekend! Exploring the Elan Valley Reservoirs (July 2026)
Both of our walks took in the Elan Valley reservoirs. There are 5 of them in all, all built at the end of the 19th century to provide fresh drinking water for Birmingham. Saturday dawned bright and sunny and the noisy sheep across the valley provided an early wake-up alarm. Emma (mentored by David) led us on essentially a 12-mile circuit of the Caban-coch Reservoir.
