The Search for Bluebells in May (Gomshall to Holmwood day walk, 16th May 2026)

Billed as including a walk through bluebell woods, six of us gathered at Gomsall station and its popular free car park before heading out into open Surrey countryside in the direction of Sutton Abinger. There, we took coffee on the village green with its nearby 13th Century church.

From there it was just a short stroll into the first of the bluebell woods promised. After stopping to photograph them the group picked up speed and eschewed the potential lunch time stop at Holmbury St Mary dashing instead straight up and onto the Greensands Way. This led to the walk’s real focus; the 294-metre-high Leith Hill; the second highest point in South-East England where we had lunch.

A big shout out to the Leith Hill Tower Café – from their compact hole in the Tower’s wall they served some tasty offerings including a Steak and Ale pasty which nicely hit the spot and provided hot beverages in proper china mugs which was also much appreciated. Whilst showers had been promised the weather was kind to us and apart from a few drops over lunch, we manged to avoid the precipitation that had been promised that day. There then should have been a second bluebell woods walk but, sadly, we were just a little too late to see the flowers! A couple of potholed fields occupied by horses followed before we crossed a red clover meadow, the Arun Valley Railway Line and then a few more fields before safely reaching our destination at Holmwood Station.
