Rochester Day Walk (20th June 2026)

Nine Ibexers met at Rochester Station at 10:30am for a varied and enjoyable day’s walk exploring both the rich history and beautiful countryside of Kent. Before setting off, we spent some time admiring two of Rochester’s most famous landmarks: the magnificent Rochester Cathedral and the imposing Norman Castle, both of which stand as reminders of the town’s long and fascinating past.

Leaving the town centre, our route took us past the site of the former Shorts aircraft factory on the banks of the River Medway, an area that played an important role in Britain’s aviation history. From there we headed inland, gradually climbing to higher ground where we were rewarded with glorious panoramic views across the Medway Valley and the surrounding countryside. A well-earned coffee break provided an opportunity to relax, enjoy the scenery and prepare for the sharp descent that followed.

By lunchtime we had reached a historic village church, where the peaceful churchyard offered the perfect spot for a picnic. Refreshed and recharged, we continued our walk during the warm afternoon, following stretches of the River Medway and enjoying the contrast between the riverside landscape and the rolling hills we had crossed earlier in the day.

The heat made the final miles feel particularly challenging, but spirits remained high as we eventually returned to Rochester. Our efforts were rewarded with refreshing drinks at a local hostelry, where we could reflect on another successful club outing. For several of us, the day did not end there; a small group stayed on for an excellent evening meal at a friendly family-run Italian restaurant, providing a fitting conclusion to a thoroughly enjoyable day of walking, good company and fine Kentish scenery.
