North Downs Wander (September 2026)
8 Ibexers assembled at Guildford station for a 15 mile walk through the North Downs Way woodlands on an overcast but warm early autumn morning. A wedding was imminent in the Victorian church at the popular viewpoint of St Martha’s Hill so we didn't linger.
We were soon at Newlands Corner, home to ancient yews (and a veteran biker hangout) for a coffee break.
Back on the path and dodging sporadic cyclists, we wandered along chatting and reached Combe Bottom for a lunch stop and mugs of tea from the strategically situated refreshments van.
After more woodland perambulation the roofs of Dorking came into view and we descended from the Greensand Ridge to pass the well-known Denbies vineyard where the grapes looked ready for harvesting.
A brief further stop enabled a couple of us to sample a glass of the local product at the very popular vineyard café before going our separate ways in Dorking. Many thanks to Dave for leading and to everyone for their company including two prospective members – we hope to see you again.
