David and Susan recently visited the Peak District to attend a one-day outdoors first aid training course. The course was held at The Adventure Hub in Bamford and run by Tor Lea Training. The latest first aid practises were taught.

The course focussed on the "A-B-C-D-E" (Assess/Alertness/Assistance/Airway, Breathing, Circulation, Discovery, Ensure what you do works/Emotional support, Environment) of first aid. As well as the associated procedures, topics included how to get a casualty into a safe airway position (recovery position), information on hypothermia and hyperthermia, how to wrap a casuality in a plastic sheet (cut-open survival bag), how to administer CPR, using an AED (Automated External Defibrillator), techniques to stop a person choking, and how to use an Israeli dressing to stop a bad bleed.

It was a very practical course. After the trainer talked about a topic we would act out what he had just told us including whatever we had learned previously. So it was very repetitive, but the best way to learn!

The content and delivery of the course was excellent and gives you everything you need to know to be a confident first aider, both in an outdoors or urban environment. For people wanting to learn even more there is a two-day course available. See the Peak Mountaineering website for details (https://www.peakmountaineering.com/).

Before driving home the day after the course David and Susan did a circular walk from Edale YHA (where we were staying). It was a very hot day, but thankfully air conditioning was available on the edge of the Kinder Scout plateau in the form of a breeze. The route took in Crookstone Hill, westwards along the edge, past the top of Grindsbrook Clough, onto Grindslow Knoll, a descent into Edale (with a visit to The Old Nags Head), and back to Edale YHA.
