The classic go-to from Dolgellau is Cadair Idris, 893m (the “giant’s chair” – according to legend, anyone who sleeps on the summit will awaken either as a poet or a madman, so we’ll plan on returning to the guesthouse!); but also within striking distance are the Rhinogs, Arans and other lesser known 700m-ish lumps like Rhobell Fawr, so plenty to explore. It’s a shame therefore that we’re only there for a weekend in November, as the area deserves a week in summer; but as it’s November, luckily wet weather options include extensive forestry and coastal paths.

* The deposit covers the accommodation cost if the weekend is full. The balance is the extra accommodation cost if the weekend is not full (up to a cap of £40 per night) plus a share of the communal food.
